Homes for Iowa is an organization and program that addresses Iowa’s housing shortage, trains offenders in skilled trades and reduces recidivism (or the tendency of a convicted criminal to reoffend). Iowa Prison Industries build the homes near the Newton Correctional Facility in Newton, Iowa. Offenders are trained in the skilled building trades, including apprenticeship curriculum. The homes are sold and delivered on site for $90,000. The city of Fayette has purchased one of the houses and will sell the home to a low-to-moderate income family (more information on that will be released when the home is ready to be sold later this year). The city used funds that the city received from TIF (Tax Increment Financing) incentives that must be spent to help low-to-moderate income families. The city also used funds from the Bolger fund to help develop the lot and to put a basement in the home. The council intends to refund the Bolger fund once the home is sold and with future property taxes the home will bring in. It will be nice to have another new home in Fayette.

There is no place like home. And there is no place like Fayette.
